Read the following passage and choose the option (A,B,C or D) that answers each of the questions below One of the most obvious negative aspects of social networking is losing Face -to-face contact with other people.Teens are sitting around with their hands all day long, tapping messages onto screens instead of communicating with real people .Many teenagers feel more comfortable with virtual friends than with real ones. The majority think that it is easier to chat on the Internet because they lack communication skills. It is also true that parents often have no knowledge about what their kids do with their phones or computer. Crosby says that,"While kids are plugged in to social media , only about 40% of parents are involved themselves." And because parents don't know the full picture , thay also don't know how to deal with a teenager's potential overuse of social media and might not even be aware that a problem exists. Therefore , social networking can be much more immediately engaging with the teenager 's life than parents are , and this fact makes virtual commmunication feels more "real" than face-to-face communication 41.What is the main idea of the passage? A.Parents should use social networks more to understand their children B.Students are using social networks too much C.Social networking brings negative effects to student's face communication D.Virtual life is easier than real life 42.What do most teenagers think about chatting on the Internet? A.Chatting on the Internet is easier than talking with real people B.Chatting on the Internet is more difficult than talking with real people C.Chatting on the Internet is funnier than talking with real people D.Chatting on the Internet is more boring than talking with real people 43.The percentage of 40% refers to A.The number of parents who let their children use social media B.The number of parents who do not want their children to use C.The number of parents who use social media D.The number of parents who do not use social media 44.Which sentence is not true according to the passage ? This is the body paragraph from an essay on social networking. There are FIVE mistakes in the text. They are either grammatically incorrect or do not fit in with the sense of the text. For questions 51-55, find and underline the mistakes and write your corrections in the spaces given below the text. The task begins with an example (0).

Example: (0) arguing → arguments

Social Networking Sites

One of the main (0)arguing against social networking sites is that people sometimes reveal information on them that often should be kept private. Recently, another development has provided more support for this argument: College admissions committees are now using social networking sites as part of the application process. According with a survey by Kaplan Test Prep (2010), over 80 percent of college admissions officers use social networking sites to communicate with students. The claiming that many colleges make is that they use these sites to attract new students or to stay in contact with former students. However, some colleges admit that they are also using social networking as part of the admissions process. The main argument for using social media is that it helps colleges evaluate candidates at a time when these colleges are experiencing large numbers of applicants. Many admissions officers believe that colleges need all the information they can get on applicants in order to make decisions because the admissions process has become very competitively. One college interviewer in a recent survey reported that if she has to choose between two students who are equally qualified in terms of grades and test scores, she looks at their online profiles to make the final decision. In addition, applicants also use social networking sites against each other. Another admissions officer revealed that his office often receives anonymous messages with links to sites that have negative information on or pictures of other applicants. Many colleges and universities have not had official policies yet on whether to use social media as part of the application process. Until these policies will become clearer, prospective college students should keep their social networking pages private or remove anything that might make them look more attractive to admissions committees.

Social networks

Business applications

Social networks connect people at low cost; this can be beneficial for entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to expand their contact base. These networks often act as a customer relationship management tool for companies selling products and services. Companies can also use social networks for advertising in the form of banners and text ads. Since businesses operate globally, social networks can make it easier to keep in touch with contacts around the world.

Medical applications

Social networks are beginning to be adopted by healthcare professionals as a means to manage institutional knowledge, disseminate peer to peer knowledge and to highlight individual physicians and institutions. The advantage of using a dedicated medical social networking site is that all the members are screened against the state licensing board list of practitioners. The role of social networks is especially of interest to pharmaceutical companies who spend approximately “32 percent of their marketing dollars” attempting to influence the opinion leaders of social networks.

Languages, nationalities and academia

Various social networking sites have sprung up catering to different languages and countries. The popular site Facebook has been cloned for various countries and languages and some specializing in connecting students and faculty.

Social networks for social good

Several websites are beginning to tap into the power of the social networking model for social good. Such models may be highly successful for connecting otherwise fragmented industries and small organizations without the resources to reach a broader audience with interested and passionate users. Users benefit by interacting with a like-minded community and finding a channel for their energy and giving.

Business model

Few social networks currently charge money for membership. In part, this may be because social networking is a relatively new service, and the value of using them has not been firmly established in customers' minds. Companies such as MySpace and Facebook sell online advertising on their site. Hence, they are seeking large memberships, and charging for membership would be counter productive. Some believe that the deeper information that the sites have on each user will allow much better targeted advertising than any other site can currently provide. Sites are also seeking other ways to make money, such as by creating an online marketplace or by selling professional information and social connections to businesses.

Privacy issues

On large social networking services, there have been growing concerns about users giving out too much personal information and the threat of sexual predators. Users of these services need to be aware of data theft or viruses. However, large services, such as MySpace, often work with law enforcement to try to prevent such incidents. In addition, there is a perceived privacy threat in relation to placing too much personal information in the hands of large corporations or governmental bodies, allowing a profile to be produced on an individual's behavior on which decisions, detrimental to an individual, may be taken.

Investigations

Social network services are increasingly being used in legal and criminal investigations. Information posted on sites such as MySpace and Facebook, has been used by police, probation, and university officials to prosecute users of said sites. In some situations, content posted on MySpace has been used in court.

Social networking is great for

A. academic organizations

B. people writing too much information about themselves

C. groups of people separated over wide areas

D. the law enforcement agencies

Why do advertisers like social network sites?

A. They are cost-effective to advertise on.

B. Detailed information on each user allows targeted ads.

C. Most users have high disposable income.

D. They can influence consumer behavior.
