Vietnam usually has a dozen storms every year from June through the end of November, and most of which occur in the Central and northern provinces. November 2nd, 1997, however, was an unexpected day when the major storm Linda raged in the South. Linda was the worst typhoon in Southern Vietnam over 100 years. According to this announcement, Formosa has discharged a significant amount of industrial waste, containing lots of harmful chemicals, into the ocean. This seriously polluted the water and killed the fish. The officials of the company, in a national correspondence meeting, apologized the Vietnamese people with a bow. Formosa would pay $500 million to treat the oceanic pollution and to compensate for economic losses of the region. However, according to environmentalists, it will take a long time for the ecosystem of the central Viet Nam to fully recover. In the mean time, local tourism and fishing industries have already been negatively affected. Due to the fear of polluted water and seafood, many tourists have cancelled their pre-booked tours to Ha Tinh, and fishermen haven’t been able to sell their fish to customers.

In order to help solve the problem of pollution, people have to be aware of its causes, some of which are quite obvious in everyday life. In many cities people are forced to breathe in polluted air, commonly known as smog, which is a mixture of gases sent out by car exhausts and factory chimneys. What can be done to reduce air pollution is to remove factories from cities and use lead-free petrol in cars.

The pollution of rivers, lakes and seas leads to the death of the creatures that live in them. Factories are largely responsible for the present situation, which is expected to worsen if governments do not make them to obey the law against pollution and punish industries which pollute water.

Finally, all over the world, especially in cities, we see huge amounts of rubbish in the streets, which we are responsible for. The rubbish collection system often does not work properly and people themselves add to the problem by dropping litter in the streets. There is so much we could do to help solve the problem. The point is how willing are we to do something about it?

1. In order to help solve the problem of pollution,
A people need to know what causes it.
B people don’t need to know what causes it.
C people have to do something immediately.
D people don’t need to do anything about it.

2. Smog is caused by
A cars only
B factories only.
C cars and factories.
D air

3. The pollution of rivers, lakes and seas is largely caused by
A car exhausts.
B lead-free petrol in cars.
C factories.
D creatures.

4. Which of the following is NOT true?
A People add to the problem of pollution by collecting rubbish.
B People add to the problem of pollution by dropping litter.
C Huge amounts of rubbish in the cities cause pollution.
D We are responsible for huge amounts of rubbish in the cities.

Water pollution is a major global problem which requires ongoing evaluation and
revision of water resource policy at all levels. It has been suggested that water
pollution is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts
for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily. An estimated 580 people in India
die of water pollution related illness every day. About 90 percent of the water in the
cities of China is polluted. As of 2007, half a billion Chinese had no access to safe
drinking water. In addition to the acute problems of water pollution in developing
countries, developed countries also continue to struggle with pollution problems. For
example, in the most recent national report on water quality in the United States, 44
percent of assessed stream miles, 64 percent of assessed lake acres, and 30
percent of assessed bays and estuarine square miles were classified as polluted.
The head of China’s national development agency said in 2007 that one quarter the
length of China’s seven main rivers were so poisoned the water harmed the skin.
Water is typically referred to as polluted when it is impaired by anthropogenic
contaminants and either does not support a human use, such as drinking water, or
undergoes a marked shift in its ability to support its constituent biotic communities,
such as fish. Natural phenomena such as volcanoes, algae blooms, storms, and

earthquakes also cause major changes in water quality and the ecological status of
water.
1. What is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases?
2. How many people die every day by water pollution?

Natural phenomena such as volcanoes, algae blooms, storms, and

earthquakes also cause major changes in water quality and the ecological status of
water.
