Sydney is Australia’s most exciting city. The history of Australia begins here. In 1788 Captain Arthur Philips arrived in Sydney with 11 ships and 1624 passengers from Britain (including 770 prisoners). Today there are about 3.6 million people in Sydney. Earth Day is an ANNUAL event created to celebrate the planet's environment and raise public awareness about pollution. Each year, Earth Day- April 22- marks the ANNIVERSARY of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The first Earth Day was in 1970.Nelson,after seeing the damate done by a 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, was inspired to organize a natinal "teach-in" that focused on educating the PUBLIC about the environment.
