VIII. Read and match sentences A-F with gaps 1-5 in the text. There is one extra sentence.
Polar bears live where the ice meets the sea in the Arctic Circle. They are born on land, but they spend most
of their time in the water. (1) ……………………………… However, the polar bear is specially adapted for life
in such a cold place.
The most important adaptation is their fur. A polar bear's fur has both long and short hairs, which means that
it is very thick. This thick fur keeps the bear warm on the land and stops it getting wet when it is swimming.
(2) ……………………………… This means that the bear appears to be white like the snow and ice around it.
The skin under the fur is black. Because of its colour, the skin absorbs the sun's heat and gives the bear
extra warmth.
Under a polar bear's thick fur and black skin is a layer of fat. This layer can be up to 12 cm thick and it
protects the bears from the cold. (3) ……………………………… Polar bears hunt seals for food and these
are difficult to find in the summer when the ice melts.
The shape of a polar bear’s body is also especially designed for the life in the Arctic. (4)
……………………………… All of their body is covered with fur except for the end of their nose. Their round
shape stops the body from losing heat and it helps the bears tolerate the cold.
Polar bears also have fur on the bottoms of their feet, which are enormous. (5) ………………………………
The fur helps the bears walk in the soft snow and also stops them from falling on the ice. The size of their
feet helps them to swim faster, too.
A. Polar bears have a very large body with a small head and very small ears.
B. The hairs are transparent and so the reflect the light from the sun.
C. Sometimes the bears can get too hot, so they jump into the water to cool off.
D. They look like giant snowshoes and they work in the same way.
E. The temperature in the Arctic can be as low as -45ºC in the winter.
F. The bears can also use it for energy when there isn’t anything to eat.

How the Government can help to turn 100,000 tonnes of surplus food into 240 million meals for the needy

Peter Sargeant has devoted his working life to growing food for Britain’s dinner tables, so nothing irks him more than having to plough perfect, ripe crops straight back into the soil. Yet it is a fact of life in farming that food goes unharvested not because nobody wants it, but because it is too expensive to get it to people who are going hungry.

Mr Sargeant, the chief operating officer for salads and mushrooms at G’s Fresh, which has almost 30,000 acres under cultivation, must decide each month whether excess crops are simply left in the field or if, somehow, he can get them to charities that turn them into meals for those who need them most. That is where FareShare, which is being supported by The Telegraph’s Christmas Charity Appeal, comes in.

FareShare arranges for surplus food to be collected from food producers and taken to thousands of charities across the country that feed people for free, ranging from hospices to church halls. It’s a complex business that involves far more than simply arranging for a lorry to turn up at the farm gates and load up with carrots or potatoes to be driven to a depot. Mr Sargeant, whose company farms land in the Midlands, the South and in several European countries, said: “Even for something as simple as mushrooms, there are a lot of costs involved in getting them to charities.

A visit to the Ocean Center – by Rebecca Hardy, aged 13

My family and I went to the Ocean Center in my hometown recently. It was one of the most

amazing places I’ve ever been. We don’t live near the sea, so I don’t get much chance to see

living creatures for myself.

Inside the center you go on what they call an ocean journey. It takes you from the smallest

stream, through rivers, and out into the deepest ocean. Along the way you meet fish and other

creatures that live in these places. And there are thousands of them – some pretty and peaceful,

and others frightening and deadly.

Our guide told us that the Center was originally set up to help look after the seas and protect the

life within them. In fact, every entry ticket bought there helps the Center to achieve its aim, so I felt

my visit was in a good cause.

By chance, we arrived just at feeding time and watched staff give food to hundreds of fish. I

wanted to do it too, but the staff wouldn’t let me. But I’d still really recommend being there at

feeding time. You’ll see feeding times advertised at the ticket sales, or you can telephone in

advance to find out when they are.

The most fascinating part of the visit for me was a new exhibition at the Center that told the story

of seahorses across the world. It has the biggest collection for these magical creatures in Europe,

and almost as many as one in the USA. I found out about what they ate, and how a male

seahorse managed to give birth to 1500 babies! And although our guide told us it was hard to see

the young ones, we were lucky enough to catch sight of some in the tank!

We also went to one of the Center’s talks about the underwater world.

Ours was called ‘Sharks’,

and the one on the following day was called ‘Creatures of the Deep’. There are talks on other

topics given on different days, so it’s best to check which talk will take place on the day you go.

Once we’d bought our ticket, we could go in and out of the Center as many times as we liked

during the day. We can also buy an annual pass that gives you unlimited entry all year around. I’m

saving up for one!

For questions 1 – 5, circle A, if the sentence is correct, or B, if the sentence is incorrect.

For questions 6 – 10, answer the questions. Use your own words.

1. Rebecca hardy’s home is close to the coast.

2. At the Ocean Center, you can see fish from both seas and rivers.

3. All the creatures that are on display at the Center aren’t dangerous.

4. The admission fee for the center goes to environmental projects.

5. Rebecca was allowed to feed the fish at the Center.

6. Rebecca had to book in advance to see the fish at their feeding time.

7. The Ocen Centre has the largest collection of seahorses in the world.

8. Rebecca was pleased that she was able to see baby seahorses in the exhibition.

9. Each day, the Centre holds lots of talks on different topics.

10. Rebecca found she could leave and return to the Centre during her visit without paying again.

You should call the police when you believe a crime is about to be committed or has been comitted. Cops would much rather hear from people BEFORE the crime than after the crime. For example, if you see a person you don't recognize as a neighbor, in your neighborhood looking into parked cars, call the cops. We would rather try to catch him and identify him before he steals the car, rather than have to chase him (endangering lives) after he steals it.

You should also call the cops about disturbing choices people make that can effect your quality of life. If someone puts their stereo on so loud it bothers you, you should go ask him to turn it down, and if he doesn't then call the cops. If there is a loud party next door and they keep waking you up, call the cops to make them turn down the noise or break up the party. Call in if you have drug dealing or prostitution in your neighborhood. You should not have to put up with that crap.

There are many ways to get your local cops to help you, that is what they are there for, you dont necessarily have to call. If it is an ongoing problem a letter or email to the chief will usually get the ball going. Or you can wave down an officer and tell them what the problem is, they are public servants that work for the citizens. A lot of serious crimes have been solved because a citizen passed along information to an officer.
