The number of species remaining to date remains a controversial topic. In different types of texts people list from 16 to 19 species. Some authors even claim that the white-legged penguin is a small diver (Eudyptula), although today it is generally considered to be a subspecies of the small penguin (eg Williams, 1995; Davis & Renner, 2003). Similarly, it is not clear whether the royal penguin is merely a color variation of the Macaroni penguin. In addition, it is quite appropriate to consider as a separate species that is the northern populations of Rockhopper penguins (Davis & Renner, 2003). Although all penguins still exist in the southern hemisphere, contrary to popular belief, they are not only found in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few species of penguins actually live that far south. There are three species living in the tropics; a species that lives far north to the Galápagos Islands (Galápagos penguins) and occasionally crosses the equator while feeding.
The largest species is the emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri): the average adult bird is about 1.1 m (3 ft 7 in) tall and weighs 35 kg (75 lb) or more. The smallest penguin is the small penguin (also known as the first penguin), which is only about 40 cm (16 in) tall and weighs 1 kg (2.2 lb). In general, penguins of larger sizes are also better able to retain heat, and therefore live in colder regions, while small penguins are mainly found in gas-bearing areas. post-temperate or even tropical.
Most penguins feed on molluscs, fish, squid and other marine species they catch while swimming in the water. They spend about half the time on land and the other half in the ocean.
One of the most challenging forms of penguin behavior occurs when a mother bird loses her child, either because they cannot tolerate the first storm in her life, or because of other reasons such as enemies. When a mother loses a baby, it intends to steal the offspring of another mother - perhaps to reduce pity. This behavior amazes scientists, because it is an emotional outburst in contrast to instinctive behavior; is something that many wildlife never have when they lose children. Naturally, the other females in the group dislike this behavior and will help the mother to actually protect her offspring. However, this behavior can be better explained as a means for females, or males, to be able to remember the full cooperation of other parents in raising the chicks, if claim that the relationship is monogamous; perhaps there is a difference between males and females involved in stealing young birds (possibly this) and between species in relation to monogamy as seasonal or permanent .
