Music has been with humans for a long time. For most of this time, music was mostly singing. People did not know how to make instruments such as guitars, drums, and pianos. If people wanted to listen to music, they had to make music. They had to make their own instruments, too. Only kings could afford to pay people to make music.
About 300 years ago, people got better at making instruments. About 100 years ago, in the 20th century, people got electricity. Musical instruments could be made in factories. More people could afford to own instruments.
The way we listen to music has also changed. In the early 20th century, radio became popular. Everyone with a radio could listen to music. After that, the record player was invented. People could buy music from record stores.
After that came cassette tapes that people could use in their cars. After that came compact discs (CDs) and DVDs. Nowadays, people can turn on a computer and download all the music they want for free. They can listen to music all day on their smartphones. We are in music heaven, right?
Not really. Giving people everything for free makes people lazy. Nowadays, most people can't play an instrument. Even some popular bands do not play instruments anymore. Their music is made on computers. Some just lip-synch and jump around like monkeys when they play a concert. My goodness, what is the world coming to?
