Các chương trình nấu ăn trên truyền hình thường là về những món ăn đẹp mắt. Điều này gây nên sự rắc rối và làm cho việc phát hiện các loại thuốc trừ sâu gây độc hại được sử dụng rất khó khăn. Khi bạn biết những người nông dân tại địa phương nuôi trồng thức ăn của bạn và những cánh đồng được dùng để sản xuất ra nó, nguy cơ thức ăn bị hư hỏng hay nhiễm bệnh sẽ giảm đi rất nhiều.

Mua thức ăn tại địa phương cũng có thể mang lại những tác động có ích đối với môi trường. Bằng việc ủng hộ những người dân địa phương, người tiêu dùng có thể bảo vệ không gian xanh và đất trồng trọt tại địa phương của mình. Mua hàng tại địa phương cũng góp phần xây dựng cộng đồng địa phương. Nếu những người nông dân có thể bán hàng trực tiếp đến người tiêu dùng thay vì qua trung gian, họ sẽ kiếm được nhiều tiền hơn cho gia đình của mình. Lợi ích tăng thêm cũng làm cho người nông dân chăm sóc đất tốt hơn và giữ tiêu chuẩn chất lượng cao. Cuối cùng, điều đó có lợi cho cả đôi bên.
